Okoye Chukwudi, AGUATA law student wrote Abuse of Power by SARS in Aguata and its environs:The indiscriminate arrest with consequential long detention by members of SARS has prompted me to let our people know the true position of the law on and arrest and investigation of crime.SARS does not have any statutory power to detain a suspect. It is the duty of the police to arrest any person alleged of committing a crime and investigate same with the view of obtaining sufficient evidence to prosecute the culprit before a court of competent jurisdiction. It pains me when I hear that SARS have arrested some persons and detain them for up to two weeks or more. This is outright abuse of power because to the best of my knowledge,SARS is only meant to assist the police and curtailing any breach of peace and order.SARS is expected to hand over to the police with immediate effect, any suspect. In no capacity in whatsoever are they expected to detain a suspect to the extent to violating human rights of those individuals. In conclusion, the government of Anambra should look into this matter and address it.I support the fight against crime going on in my state but not to the detriment of infringing upon the human rights of innocent citizens. Those affected should also report to any civil organisations for proper actions to be taken against such corrupt members of SARS.
