Old Guy Putting Michigans Open Carry Gun Laws To The Test Whenever I hear someone say that it was acceptable for a Black person to be shot and killed because that individual didnt behave in some perfectly prescribed way when interacting with police, I remember this incident that happened near my home this past spring. This man refused to identify himself, didnt comply with police requests, was carrying a loaded assault rifle, made obscene gestures to officers, caused a situation in which at least four police cars and multiple officers blocked Cork Street for more than a half an hour (can you figure out how much that cost the City of Kalamazoo and the businesses that were affected?). The rule of law is often applied differently to different people. We cant begin to address these problems unless we can at least acknowledge that fact. Oh...and this gentleman wasnt shot, he wasnt even arrested.
