Old mother cats, lie on the edge of the bed, watching their kittens jump after strings or whatever else has become the object of rapt attention----but rarely do they jump down and play. Having learned to mellow out a bit, they seem to know there is often a string attached to that puff of feathers, that dangling ball that will drive a kitten wild. A string that with a quick snap, will pull the toy out of reach, leaving one, standing there, paws waiving in the air, wondering what just happened. Having learned through experience that dancing feathers are often attached to strings, which if followed, most often lead to the source of all that energy----a hand. Old mother cats learn that their instinct to react to bouncing feathers can be compelling, addictive--almost impossible to resist----but sometimes, it is more of a comfort, to stay on that warm spot on the end of the bed, and let the children play. They learn to keep their eyes on the hand--as if there is a difference, between a real bird, and a bouncing feather toy. As if they know the difference, between what their instinct tells them to do---and what their experience has shown them will the better move. Turn on a can opener though, open a can of tuna though, and that wise old lady, her tail in the air, is off like a shot to the kitchen........So goes the way of the world. Keep your eyes on the hands. All that flutters, that bounces in front of your face, is sometimes, just a toy. Better to watch the hand that feeds you.
