Old, rich and spoiled: Why it’s high time seniors paid up. -- Front cover headline of the current (Sept. 15) Macleans, depicting a smug, elderly lady throwing around $20 and $50 bills. This is more ageist hate propaganda from this source designed to divide the generations and promote hatred and contempt for one segment of our population. The editors of Macleans have sunk to the level of the Red Rag, the UBC engineering students newspaper at UBC in the early 1970s and its sick jokes about concentration camps. They are profoundly lacking in good taste and the concepts of fair play and balanced reporting. They have a right to express their opinions: No one should go running to a tribunal because of unfair remarks against their group unless those remarks include advocating a crime. However, this is a seriously untruthful propaganda. I supposed the single elderly men who died in the Columbus Hotel fire were spoiled, rich and capable of throwing $20 and $50 bills about with abandon. There are lots of single men and women scraping by in substandard housing on minimal pension income. Once again, the typical trick of Macleans is to compare the lives of the wealthy Ivy League graduates among the Baby Boomer population with other demographic groups and imply all boomers are as wealthy as they are. Have the editors of Macleans tried to live on $1,400 of pension income?
