Old sign on a bridge over the railway line at Instow. Motor Car Acts 1896 and 1903 are stamped on the top. Had a look to see what they were.. The 1896 Act they increased the speed limit from 4 mph in rural areas and 2 mph in towns up to 14 mph... Although many MPs tried to block the move as it was deemed furious driving in relation to a horse And the 1903 Act introduced the use of number plates, that drivers had to hold a licence although no driving test was required they did have to pay the council 5 shillings for the privilage. The crime of reckless driving was introduced. And the speed limit incresed to 20 mph...
