Olde Towne Fenton Pet Hospital - Dogs, Cats & Animals As the weather is becoming cooler in St. Louis, we find that unwanted visitors want to make our home theirs. To discourage these visitors we often put out mouse and/or rat poison. Unfortunately, one of the most common poisonings we see in our pets is mouse bait poisonings. In the past, we have been able to treat for these poisonings. However, the EPA has passed laws changing the active ingredients in the mouse and rat poison bait. The claim by the EPA is that it is safer for pets, children, and wildlife. These new products are to be in tamperproof containers. The ones I have seen recently were plastic and have been chewed on by the mice on the inside and the dog on the outside. The only way we can know the best way to treat your pet is to have the box with the active ingredient. The best way to prevent accidental poisoning in your own home is to use traps or live traps.
