Older than the Country it serves. Established by the American Continental Congress almost a year before the Declaration of Independence was crafted and signed: A Corps of Marines was authorized to serve aboard armed vessels of the fledgling American Navy. Two hundred thirty nine years ago today, the greatest fighting force in the history of armed conflict took its first unsteady steps. I say unsteady because tradition tells us that the implementing documents and first enlistments into what has become the United States Marine Corps were completed in Tun Tavern, Philadelphia! As a cartoon I read many years ago, while still on active duty in WesPac reminded me: It only makes sense that the Marine Corps was started in a tavern. What sober group of men would have ever said HEY! I know, lets start a Marine Corps! :) Well, Id have to say that their harebrained scheme turned out to be a great benefit to America and really to free men and women everywhere. As our Hymn declares, our flags unfurled to every breeze...from dawn to setting sun...We have fought in every clime and place that we could take a gun.... We have been peacekeepers, war fighters, occupation forces, disaster relief troops, evacuation teams, deterrents, forces in readiness--you name it, the Marine Corps has done it...and done it superbly. To all who have served-in whatever capacity, I honor you and thank you for your commitment. There is a saying that I believe is true: Once a Marine, Always a Marine. Its been more than thirty-seven years since I laid aside my greens and put on my jeans and more than thirty years since I left my contractor job training Marines for battle in order to pursue my career advancement. But my heart has always remained with that Band of Brothers the Devildogs and Leathernecks and Jarheads who constitute The Few..The Proud...The MARNIES! Happy Birthday Marines!
