Olympiad: What to watch today The play for first place is between China (12 points, 7th seed) and Azerbaijan (13 points, 8th seed). Both teams have their chances. Romania (12 points, 32nd seed) is playing the Czech Republic (12 points, 16th seed). The Czech roundly defeated the Russians yesterday in their first tough match, Id still give them a tiny edge. Bulgaria (12 pts., 18th seed) is playing Ukraine (11 pts, 2nd seed). The Bulgarians have had a tough tournament so far but have remained undefeated. Topalov scores well, Cheparinov was solid and Iotov is the tournaments best player so far. Ukraine made for some news with a second round draw against Norway 2 and the lost against Uzbekistan, but they are back in the fight after trouncing a few lower ranked teams. Ivanchuks performance has been uneven, Ponomariov and Eljanov solid. Korobov hasnt played too well so far. Id say first and fourth board results will be critical. France (11 pts, 3rd seed) plays Poland (11 points, 15th seed). France is playing with their best performers and although they have not shown their class yet, neither has Poland had too. Id take chance and give France. Germany-Cuba is too close too call on paper. India-Armenia should go to Armenia, though players from both teams are up to par. Hungary-USA The Hungarians have performed rather well as a team and more convincingly than the US. Rapport has had a rather bad tournament, his third board contest against Onischuk is critical. On board four, well have contest between two players with a great performance so far: Judit Polgar plays Shankland.
