Olympic Training venue Mayesbrook Arena will tomorrow be renamed the Jim Peters Stadium after local Olympic marathon hero. Jim was one of the most renowned athletes to come out of the borough and he attended Grafton School. He competed for Great Britain at the London 1948 Olympics and broke the world record for the men’s marathon four times in the 1950s. He is a credit, not only to our borough but to the country as a whole. Barking and Dagenham boasts a number of other sporting icons like Bobby Moore, Sir Trevor Brooking and Jason Leonard.
