Omega-3 Fights Heart Disease Researchers have been investigating why middle-aged men who live in Japan have less coronary artery calcification (a predictor of heart disease) than middle-aged white men living in the U.S. They believe that it’s because the Japanese men include significantly much more fish in their diets. Whilst previous studies have looked at the effect of fish oil on cardiovascular health, none of them have investigated as high an intake as that which people in Japan actually consume. In this study, 300 men were followed for five years. After accounting for risk factors for heart disease, the U.S. men were found to have three times the incidence of coronary artery calcification than the Japanese men, while the levels of marine-derived omega-3 fatty acid in the blood were more than 100 per cent higher in the Japanese men than in the white men. Marine-derived omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in fish, especially oily fish may help to reduce inflammation and slow the formation of fatty plaques in arteries, said lead author Akira Sekikawa, an associate professor of epidemiology.
