On 12 May 1551, the UNIVERSIDAD NACIONAL MAYOR DE SAN MARCOS was established by royal decree in Lima, Peru, making it the first institution of higher learning in the Americas. Today, the NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SAN MARCOS is one of most respected universities in the world, offering 60 academic degrees to their student body of more than 30,000 undergraduate and 4,000 graduate students, who come from all over the world. A leading center for medical, scientific, historical, archeological, artistic and literary studies, the university has also a number of public institutions under its control, including the Museum of Natural History of Lima.
