On 12 September 2012 amendments were made to the Animal Care and Protection Act 2001 in Queensland to protect dugong and turtles from unreasonable pain and suffering. These changes have not taken away the hunting rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander peoples; however they aim to protect turtles and dugongs from unreasonable pain and suffering.
