Thank you for your question. You ask 3 very interesting questions, thus, I thought a little background info on mantras was important first in order to synergise the concept of mantras. We as human beings are really out of touch with our selves and we are becoming more and more disharmonic with life and our reality of it. On a base level we can definitely take a lesson or two from animals who function as a complete organism rather than ,unlike us, individual entities struggling for survival. Geese fly for long distances as a team, schools of fish stick together and follow each others every move with out known mechanism of communication, how is this all happening? There must be a level of consciousness that warrants communication on such a subtle platform that it completely bewilders our greatest minds of today. We as humans have lost the ability to harness our consciousness and to develop it to perceive higher realities of this planet and ultimately the highest reality of creation. This is where mantras become very effective, like a powerful energy vortex, it harnesses the energy of the spiritual reality into our present reality through the medium of sound. Now, why are there different mantras? Well according to our level of consciousness we will be desiring different mantras. In Vedic thought, there are elementary mantras that invoke specific outcomes like invocational mantras for peace or auspiciousness and overall wellbeing of the person, and then there are "maha" mantras which are specific mantras which offer the person the highest optimum experience of the divine consciousness within the shortest duration and with least effort. Such a super charged mantra is the commonly known Hare Krishna mantra. Now can there be any emperic evidence of this. Well the great spiritual teachers of India have been chanting this mantra for eons gone by and not until recent, Swami Prabhupada has taken this mantra to the west in 1966. Sitting under a tree in Thompkins Square park in New York, he started chanting this mantra there, and the rest was history. The evident proof is that this mantra has changed the lives of the lowest class of people of the west into sadhus, pure radiant devotees of Krishna, amazingly to all, this achievement was achieved instantly. As soon as they tethered themselves to a bonafide carrier of the Hare Krishna mantra, the effects of the mantra was unleashed. Now why is this mantra so powerful? This mantra consists of the names of God, the supreme divine consciousness. Now according to Newtonian physics, everything in existence is nothing but energy, now Vedic thought takes it one step further, that this energy, must have an energetic source!! So the "Hare" "Krishna" maha mantra is nothing but this. Hare is an address to the energy of the Lord"Hare" and the name "Krishna" is the energetic source. By combining these names together we have the opportunity to transport ourselves (YOGA) into that divinity via sound thus raising our individual consciousness up to that level. Now, what about "Rama" Well this is a special feature of the Maha Mantra, "Rama" means the reservoir of all pleasure we can ever conceive. An infinite ocean of pleasure, so not only do we connect with the divine being himself via sound, but we tap into that infinite source of happiness and joy that he himself experiences, so not only do we super charge our physical being to perfect harmony with the divine, we also completely satisfy our emotional, spiritual side by connecting with an infinite ocean of pleasure.
