On 13th November 1764, exactly 250 years ago today, a boat sank on the Zürisee (the Lake of Zürich) taking 18 souls with it. Until a century ago it was difficult to travel along the lake by road as the shoreline was either marsh or too steep. As such, ship transport was commonplace. Witnesses said the boat boarded too many passengers and was overloaded with heavy cargo: grain, seed and --- what else --- several barrels of wine. It didnt help that there was apparently a raging storm. I will reflect upon this anniversary when I make my maritime commute across that same body of water tonight.
