On 17th September 2014, Udayan Care organised a one day “Multi-Sectoral Consultation on Aftercare Programmes for Children in Institutional Care in India,” supported by UNICEF India, at India International Centre, New Delhi. This was first of its kind consultation, as Aftercare is a largely unaddressed topic within the provision of child welfare services. During the consultation, the current status, the strengths and gaps in legislation, as well as best practices were discussed. Most interesting was the session on Young people, coming from 6 childcare organisations. Their beautiful success stories brought forth a lot of cheer and hope. At the end, the group work brought forth a lot of recommendations and a way forward to improve Aftercare facilities in India. These recommendations will soon be submitted to relevant ministries. At the occasion, the second issue of the academic journal, focused on the children in institutional care and alternative care: “Institutionalised Children Exploration and Beyond” was also released to much fanfare.
