On 22 May, 2014, the Netherlands held its European Parliament Elections. I myself was standing as a candidate. I did so on behalf of D66 (ALDE Group: Alliance of Liberals and Democrats in Europe), the party that received the overall highest number of votes in the Dutch EP elections. I am honored to have taken part in the elections, yet at the same time wish to apologizing for the fact that I did not run in the campaign. My decision not to do so is based on a my current secondment to the OSCE in Ukraine, a position in which I find my personal integrity vis-a-vis neutrality of higher importance than winning the elections. However I do wish to express my sincere gratitude to all those who casted their vote in my support. I am honored by the trust installed in me and hope that I may take your vote as a vote for the deepening of democratic instruments, the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms and - above all - the lasting believe that peace is possible. Today, I proudly present to you the results from the EP elections 2014 as far as my own candidature is concerned: total number of votes: N = 1.972; final ranking position on the list of candidates: # 18; dispersion per electoral district: Groningen: 16; Leeuwarden: 10; Assen: 3; Zwolle: 21; Lelystad: 7; Nijmegen: 43; Arnhem: 61; Utrecht: 75; Amsterdam: 52; Haarlem: 38; Den Helder: 21; The Hague: 50; Rotterdam: 15; Dordrecht: 39; Leiden: 43; Middelburg: 19; Tilburg: 1.147; Den Bosch: 251; Maastricht: 59; Island of Bonaire (Dutch Antilles): 2.
