On 27 July 1863 Ann Chase died on at 32 Hollingsworth Street. Her age on the death certificate is 59 (b Ann died on 27 July 1863 at 32 Hollingsworth Street. Her age on the death certificate is 59 (born c1804). The cause of her death is give as “Chronic bronchitis 1 year/Asthma. Valvular disease of the heart”, and she is noted as “Wife of Francis Chase Bootmaker”. A Mary Lawrence of 27 Upper Victoria Road, Holloway was present at Ann’s death. This could be her daughter Mary Ann. Less than a year later Francis died on 18 May 1864 also at 32 Hollingsworth Street. His age on the death certificate is noted as 60 (born c 1804). The cause of his death is given as “Morbus cordis” (i.e. heart disease). Present when Francis died was E A Chase of 3 Barnsbury Row, Park Road, who is probably his son Edward. Ann was buried in 2 August 1863 and her husband Francis Chase on 26 May 1864 at “The Burial Ground for Finchley for the Parish of St Mary”. The cemetery, now known as Islington Cemetery, is just off of the North Circular Road in High Road, London N2. More about 1863: The Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves in the Confederacy was issued by Abraham Lincoln on 1 January. The London Underground began operations on 10 January on a four mile stretch between Paddington (Bishops Road) and Farringdon Street. On 17 January David Lloyd George, Prime Minister during WW1, was born Ann was born c1804 and there a Parish record of the baptism of an Ann Odell on 29 July 1804 at Blunham (nr Muggerhanger, Bedfordshire. Her parents are William and Elizabeth Odell. This made more sense after I saw that Grandma Ruth’s sister Hannah who died on Christmas Eve 1880 had Odell as a forename. On 28 June 1826 there is a Parish Record of a Francis Chase marrying an Ann Odell at Old Church, St Pancras. I can find no record of them in the 1841 Census, but in the 1851 Census they are living at 9 Rutland Place, Islington. Francis is noted as 47 (born c 1804) and is a “Master Boot Maker”. Ann is also noted as 47 and is a “Laundress”. Francis notes his birthplace as Stanbridge and Ann notes her birthplace as Muggerhanger, both places in Bedfordshire, which ties in with the baptismal places above. NB: I think the address should be Rutland Terrace. On the census returns households either side of the Chases are shown as living at Rutland Terrace. I believe Rutland Terrace which was in what is now Benwell Road may still be there although the roads opposite now lie under the Emirates Stadium. Francis and Ann have five children. Mary Ann is aged 15 (born c1836) with no occupation or being a scholar shown. William Richard is 14, although I think this is 12 as the 14 is heavily written over what looks like 12 and is an “Errand Boy”. Susan Rebecca is aged 9 (born c1842) Edward Alfred is aged 5 (born 1845) and Ruth Amelia is aged 2 (born 1849) and they are all “Scholars. All of the children are born in Islington. I wonder if Susan, Edward and Ruth were scholars at the Holloway Ragged School which opened in 1846 or the Holloway Free School which are both just around the corner from Rutland Terrace in Hornsey Road. In 1861 at the time of the Census, the family are at 32 Hollingsworth Street, Islington West. Francis is aged 57 (born c 1804) and a “Boot Maker”, Ann is aged 56 (born c 1805) and a “Laundress”. Two of their children are still living with them, Edward aged 16 and he is a “Painter” and Susan aged 20 (born c1841) and she is an “Ironer”. A Hollingsworth Street aside: In 1860 Mrs Mary Tealby set up “The Temporary Home For Lost And Starving Dogs” in a disused barn in Hollingsworth Street. There it remained until 1871 when it moved to Battersea and was renamed “The Battersea Dogs Home”. Ann and Francis’ s son William Richard was to marry Charlotte Chappell Pope and among their children was my Grandma Ruth, making Francis and Ann my Great Great Grandparents. 1.
