On 27th September 2014 at Miharati during a function to present NHIF cards to persons living with disabilities. I am sponsoring 120 such people, 10 from each of our locations with 1 year contributions. I continue to urge all my constituents to register for NHIF insurance. I would rather we do harambees for those unable to raise the contributions than for the hefty hospital bills. I also took time to engage this vulnerable part of the society and I can only say that this country and especially us the leaders owe them a deep apology for the continuing injustices meted on them. Just pause and think of that poor parent in Kipipiri who begets a blind child and has to struggle and balance her daily chores and caretaking for the helpless child until he/she attains school going age. Her options are then to raise about 20k per term and take her to a private/church special school in Thika or forget about education for the kid and probably hide him/her from the society and later attract self righteous condemnation from us. Of course we shout from the rooftops that we have Free Primary Education. Considering the figures I got today, the 5% bursary my CDF has been allocating to pupils/students with disabilities is far from being sufficient. I inquired from the County Government and was told no money had been allocated to this group. Urgent legislative and budgetary interventions are a must both at national and county governments. I really must do something in parliament. The society must change their attitude towards the disabled.
