On 29 December 1939, the Consolidated B-24 LIBERATOR heavy bomber made its maiden flight. It was used in World War II by several Allied air forces and navies, and by every branch of the American armed forces during the war, attaining a distinguished war record with its operations in the Western European, Pacific, Mediterranean, and China-Burma-India Theaters. The B-24 LIBERATOR still holds the distinction as being the most-produced American military aircraft in history, with 18,482 units being turned out by Consolidated and Ford. A couple are still flying, including the Diamond Lil, which is operated by the Commemorative Air Force out of Addison, Texas.
