On 31 December 2014, Palestinian Ahmad Samih Bdeir was crushed and suffocated to death at an Israeli military checkpoint near Tulkarm. En route to his construction job, Bdeir died due to the overcrowding at this occupation army-run, apartheid checkpoint. This horror story made me recall the last words of Eric Garner, killed by an NYPD officer on 17 July of this year, who in his last seconds kept repeating: I cant breathe. Strength to, and solidarity with, all those fighting for air in 2015. The tradition of the oppressed teaches us that the ‘state of emergency’ in which we live is not the exception but the rule.
