On 5 January 1971, a fully laden petrol tanker crashed and overturned on the Pacific Highway, right in front of Hornsby Fire Station. Flames quickly spread to the station setting it on fire. The petrol tanker driver was pulled clear of the wreckage unharmed. The firefighters at the station managed to get out just in time. Blazing fuel from the accident also flowed down the main street setting things on fire. The fire station was destroyed and 17 buildings were damaged.
