On 9 January 2015 at 19:30 a truck was hijacked at Merrivale while travelling along the N3 freeway. The suspects threatened the driver with a firearm and then bundled him into the cabin of the truck. The suspects drove the truck loaded with office furniture to another destination where they dropped off the cargo before releasing the driver at the Colenso off-ramp. On 10 January 2015 at 01:30 the Ladysmith Cluster Trio Crime Task Team traced the stolen property to the Ematsheni area following an around the clock investigation. The Task Team and Ematsheni SAPS members swooped on a shop near the Royal National Park where they recovered the load of furniture. A foreign national citizen was arrested and a large amount of cash was seized along with false registration plates. The suspect (23) is appearing in the Bergville Magistrates Court today on charges of possession of stolen property. The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the police for the arrest and the recovery of the goods. “We will not tolerate those that deal in stolen goods and we are appealing to members of the public not to buy these stolen items which are sold at extremely low prices and under very suspicious circumstances,” she said.
