On 9 October, Lloyd’s List published an article titled “Intercargo criticises ‘unacceptably high’ bulk carrier deaths” by David Osler. The article claims that the deaths from bulk carrier incidents remain “unacceptably high”, despite continued improvement in the 10-year rolling average. According to the article Intercargo reported nine serious bulk carrier incidents in 2012, with 14 people killed in six of these, including 12 seafarers. However, the numbers are down from 38 deaths in 2011 and 44 in 2010. Expressed in terms of 10-year averages, the average annual number of lives lost has fallen from 52 for 1994-2003 to 23 for 2003-2012. The article further states that the average age of the world fleet is decreasing. The most popular flags for bulk carriers remain the big four: Panama, Hong Kong, Liberia and the Marshall Islands.
