On A Higher Ground Einstein believed in the harmony of all that exists and was in awe of nature not God. Adil Jussawala in his “mortal moon” bemoans our ignorance, “To become believers, to have faith, may be the only redemption according to the tunnel vision of the clergy. Many doubts assail us to take this path. Besides, wherever we look we see the ugly face of religion, the fratricidal monster and its progeny - the fundamentalists who raise their fists, wreak havoc and terror on the world while god is mute. The fabric of love and compassion is ripped apart – no shelter, no source of light - only a dark tunnel. Diana Nyad, who at 64 swam 180 km of shark infested waters from Cuba to Florid, justified her atheism by saying she was a humanist who believed in nature which revealed itself in the compassion of the co-existence of all beings and not in something religious. Her rejoinder was: “I can stand at the beach’s edge with the most devout Christian, Jew or Buddhist, go down and weep with the beauty of the universe; and be moved by the billions who have lived before us, loved, hurt and suffered – we just have to be in awe of the universe, that is real divinity.
