On April 11th AATWs Song-a-day ventures to Costa Rica to celebrate Juan Santamaria Day, which marks the 1856 victory of the Costa Rican army in the Battle of Rivas over the army of erudite American William Walker whose forces had recently conquered Nicaragua with the goal of ruling his own pro-slavery nation. Juan Santamaria was a 25 year-old laborer and drummer boy in the Costa Rican army who volunteered for what was effectively a suicide mission to light fire to the hostel where Walkers forces were based. Walker eventually died in a Honduran jail, but none too soon for the Central American countries he tried to conquer. Today Costa Ricans still celebrate the contribution of Santamaria.
