On August 1, 1864, Confederate prisoners from the battle of the Crater began their movements toward City Point where ships picked them up to carry them on to prison camps in the north. In Petersburg, Union prisoners were marched through the streets with high ranking officers at the front of the column. The column was then arranged two white soldiers followed by two black soldiers until there were no more US Colored Troops to intermingle with the Union troops. Petersburg resident Victoria Dodson, only a child then, stood in the front yard of her parents home shouting to Kill them everyone. Her mother replied to her daughter, Come into this house, or theyll be killing you. Over the next five days, starting tomorrow, we will post about the varied experiences of prisoners from the Battle of the Crater. They will represent 2 Confederate soldiers (with very different opinions of the war); 1 United States Colored soldier, 1 white Union officer, and 1 Native American.
