On August 1st, 1914, Germany declared war on Russia and thereby entered into what was to become known as World War I. Even 100 years later, war cemeteries for soldiers from the United Kingdom, the USA, Germany, France, Belgium, Canada and even New Zealand bear witness to the 17 million victims of the war. And so the words of Canadian soilder and poet John McCrae remind us why today we work together for peace and friendship between states that a century ago, driven by mutual mistrust and enmity, believed their only option was to wage war against each other: In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.
