On August 26 AATW travels to Papua New Guinea where we join the entire nation in prayer . . . sort of. August 26th is PNGs Repentance Day, a public holiday that is essentially a Christian day or prayer in this primarily, but not exclusively, Christian nation. In 2011 Peter ONeill became PNGs prime minister after his predecessor failed to survive a no confidence vote. One of ONeills first actions was to declare the Day of Repentance, which he scheduled just two weeks later, on August 26th. ONeill provided little explanation, and this move confused many of PNGs secular and religious leaders, especially those in PNGs small but active Muslim community, but some of PNGs Christian leaders suggested a bit of repenting may be good for everyone. Pastor Jack Edward of the Shema Evangelism Ministry became Repentance Day coordinator and declared the purpose of the day was for people to come together and pray and ask the Lord to forgive us for the wrongs that are happening in our nation. Today AATW hopes we wont have to seek forgiveness for singing Waitpela Gras, a song in which Papua New Guinean musician, George Telek remembers fondly recalls the days of his youth.
