On August 7, 1930 Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith were lynched in Marion, Indiana for the alleged murder of a factory worker and the rape of his companion. The case was never solved, but the iconic photograph of the lynching taken by Lawrence Beitler inspired the poem and song Strange Fruit written by Abel Meeropol. Strange Fruit was recorded by Billie Holiday in 1939 and it became her biggest-selling record.
