On BBC Radio 4 today Admiral Lord West started his 15-part series that tells the story of the Royal Navy during the twentieth century, when through political, social, technological and economic turmoil, the Navys fortunes mirrored those of Britain. The first episode began on the beaches of northern France, as he introduced the series through the greatest amphibious assault in history - D-Day, a turning point in naval warfare.
