On Christmas day in 1918, just a little over a month after the end of World War I, a writer for the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette wrote: “This Christmas comes to Fort Wayne, not a war Christmas, but a Yule-tide such as the world has not seen since 1913. For four long bloody years, the champions of human liberty among the nations of the earth have fought desperately and made enormous sacrifices that democracy and liberty for mankind might be freed from the yoke of tyranny and the burden of military oppression . . .This Christmas tide the song of the ages ‘Peace on earth, good will toward men’ rings true.”
