On December 2, 2000 Officer Mark Hiatt was responding to a funeral escort on his motorcycle. A truck failed to yield right of way taking a left turn in front of Mark Hiatt at the intersection of 29th Street and Haswell Dr. Mark was born in Houston and lived in Franklin where he was a member of the Masonic Lodge AF & AM Patrick No. 359. Mark came to work for the Bryan Police Department 6 years prior to his death. He was a member of the Bryan Police Officers Association (BPOA) and the Texas Narcotics Officers Association. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bryan, where he was with the Estonia-Germany Missionary Group and taught fourth-grade Sunday school. He was also a member of the Sam Houston Elementary P.T.O. Officers remember his infectious smile “No matter what kind of day it was, Mark was always smiling.” The BPOA set up a scholarship fund in his name and is still collecting the start up money with hopes of awarding scholarships in the future. Mark left behind a wife and two children.
