On December 21st, in 1920, Harold Lang was born. Harold Lang delivered telegrams as a youth and in 1940, he took one backstage at a San Francisco theater where a ballet company was rehearsing. “I just stood around for hours watching the kids sweat,” he said in an interview years later. The next day he returned to the dance training he had abandoned a few years earlier and studied under William Christensen at the San Francisco Ballet, where he made his debut in 1938. He soon joined the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo (until 1945). In 1943 he joined Ballet Theatre (now American Ballet Theatre), creating roles in Jerome Robbins ballets ‘Fancy Free’ (the first sailor) and ‘Interplay.’ Mr. Lang appeared on Broadway in ‘Look, Ma, Im Dancin!’ (1947), also choreographed by Robbins. He next played Bill Calhoun in the original production of ‘Kiss Me, Kate’ (1948). His success in that show won him the role of Joey in the revival of ‘Pal Joey.’ In 1947, 1948 and 1952, he was awarded the Donaldson Award as best dancer on Broadway. youtube/watch?v=DIOd2G5tg8A
