On December 23, 1893, Hansel und Gretel, the fairy tale #opera of German composer Engelbert Humperdinck, premiered in #Weimar, #Germany. Legendary composer and conductor Richard Strauss, a friend of #Humperdinck’s, conducted the premiere and the #Christmas season performances! The following year, Gustav Mahler conducted the opera’s #Hamburg premiere. Hansel und Gretel quickly achieved worldwide success and is #Humperdink’s most famous composition. In the second act, before #HanselandGretel fall asleep alone in the woods, they sing the Abendsegen, known as the Children’s Song or Evening Prayer. We share with you this recording of Leonard Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic in an orchestral #Abendsegen.
