On Earth Day, lets celebrate the natural treasures that make Michigan special - especially the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes support thousands of jobs for Michiganders. It is critical that we protect them from devastating threats, whether it is invasive species like Asian carp, pet coke, or aging oil pipelines through the Straits of Mackinac. We saw the impact oil spills can have on Michigans natural resources in 2010 when an Enbridge pipeline spilled over 800,000 gallons of crude oil into the Kalamazoo River. Over 3 years later recovery efforts are still ongoing. An oil spill or an outbreak of Asian carp in the Great Lakes would put thousands of Michiganders out of work and rob of us all of a treasured resource. I am proud of my record fighting for the Great Lakes throughout public service, and I will continue to fight to protect them in the U.S. Senate.
