On FB I find the yes to independence posts provide compelling reasons to vote no, and the no to independence posts often make you sympathise with yes. And I bet folks reading this agree with half of what I just said - thats not just tribal politics, but a type of extremism. No real discussion, having more respect for your own beliefs than the diversity of others - Filtering everything through what you already think. Boring at best, depressing maybe...but if folks want to spend millions of pounds between now and September before we all vote how we would have done anyway, then maybe itll give us a bit of an economic stimulus. Referendums could be a democracys solution to future economic crises. Your ideal referendum would be something like Should Marmite be the national spread of Scotland? - not too consequential, just incase we dont really think about it for ourselves. A good two year build up to that could sort out unemployment. There would have to be an alternative though, one camp for marmite, one for jam and for the sake of our children, obviously one for a bit of both. You never know til you try it.
