On Facebook, I love that I can have a laugh with someone I worked with twenty years ago as though I were in the same room, whilst sharing a joke with friends I was at lunch with today. on the other side of the globe. Simultaneously. But what I dont like nowadays if the feeling of trepidation I sometimes feel when I log in and wonder if someone has trolled me, or someone close to me. When I started on Facebook in 2008, it felt like a mechanism to engage in a global group hug and I loved it then, as I still do. But it seems to me sometimes that it has turned into a mechanism for delivering sentiments emanating from a meanness of spirit. Friends, think twice about what you post, bearing in mind who sees it and the fact that opinions expressed in writing are devoid of the tones and nuances of the spoken word. Tact is a good, old-fashioned concept that needs to enjoy a comeback in the social media. It is the art of holding a controversial opinion but expressing it politely. Or indeed deciding not to express at a particular time or in a particular forum, out of consideration for others.
