On Feelings & Emotions Let me share the way I understand and use these two terms (it is somewhat different from everyday usage in which they are pretty much interchangeable): "Feelings" come from believing thoughts that accept, love and embrace reality (what is). "Emotions" come from believing thoughts that judge, resist and argue with reality (what is). The central insight: Feelings and emotions are NOT caused by the EVENTS of our life. Feelings and emotions come from believing our THOUGHTS ABOUT the events of our life. The main practice: 1. Notice how resistant thoughts create unpleasant emotions, and a state of being that is heavy, contracted and tangled. 2. Notice how welcoming thoughts create pleasant feelings, and a state of being that is light, expanded and free. 3. Notice when we do not attach to any thought or story, all emotions and feelings disappear, everything is transparent and at ease. Summary: This gentle and persistent noticing of how thoughts affect feelings and emotions is all that is needed to awaken our natural wisdom. It slowly begins to un-clutch us from the illusion that outer circumstances affect our happiness and state of being. The result is that our desire to manipulate, influence and control our circumstances begins to fade away along with all conflict and confusion. We abide as the silent witness or backdrop on which the play of life occurs, and actually not even that. What remains is an unconditional happiness that has no cause, no reason and needs no support or protection of any kind. This is our real home.
