On Friday 11th October, in game # 19 of the Fast Cash, Ayoub Morancie & Ronald Charles Trafalgar Basketball league, Maggie’s Magnificos defeated the Spartan United Ballerz after the game was blown off by the referees in the 3rd period due to disorderly conduct by two members of the United Ballerz team. The Magnificos, having an up and down season thus far, due to a blown off game and a controversial refereeing decision were looking to finally set their mark, and stick to winning ways, while the United Ballerz, having lost their opening 3 games, were looking for their 1st win of the season. On the 3rd consecutive night of the week, basketball was again to be played in the cold and windy weather. The quarter began, with both teams trading buckets back and forth in the opening 4 minutes. But with Daniel Ormond being the only star player on the Spartan Ballerz team, it would have been a long and lonely night for him. As for the Magnificos, they possessed a star studded team. With star point guard Keiron Charles out, he was not missed, with the likes of Ian “Eyore” Brumant, McCray Edwards and Randy Rodney stepping up and not forgetting Kelsey Guye. Certainly one to fear. All teams please take note. This guy is a baller. The Magnificos scored 21pts in the opening period, with 10pts coming from the hands of Guye, while limiting the Spartans to a mere 11pts. Period number 2 was more of the same for the Magnificos, as they continued to dominate on offense, and play solid defense. An additional 19pts was score in the quarter, with another disappointing period for the Spartans with only 12pts scored. The only highlight of the game thus far for the Spartans was the performance of Daniel Ormond. He had 10pts in the quarter along with 6 from the 1st. At the half, the Magnificos lead dominantly by 17pts. 40pts – 23pts. With the rains coming down heavily at the start of the 3rd period, both teams decided that they wanted to play, as the court DOES NOT slide. And so we began, and along with that came more, and more, and some more dominances from the Magnificos. With about 5 minutes to go in the quarter, bad then turned to worst for the Spartan Ballerz. Down by 31pts, 61pts – 30pts, the referee halted the game, and asked players of the Spartans team who were sitting on the subs bench, to go to the stands instead to shelter rather than sitting on the subs bench while the game was in progress. They refused and were issued technical fouls. They were again issued with more technical fouls to eject them from the game and still, they refused to move. The rally cries from their team mates as well as the opposing team players, fell on deaf ears. Both sets of player desperately wanted to play, and kept saying to them, “fellars, don’t mess it up, we want to play, don’t mess it up, just move”. With the referees’ patience being taken to the extent, the game was blown off, and awarded to the Magnificos who won by default since they were leading 61pts -30pts. No statistics will be provided for this game. PS: To all players, teams and other interested persons, the Trafalgar Basketball Committee will NOT tolerate any forms of violence towards its referees and other officials. Any unsportsmanlike behavior will result in the suspension of the player, or his team depending on the severity of the act committed. Rule # 9 states “Pursuant to the tribunal resolutions, the Executive Committee shall suspend any player/team from the league for any behavior that it determines as not in keeping with the spirit of the friendly competition expected for all players and teams. Normal FIBA rules shall govern situations including, but is not limited: - to unsportsmanlike conduct, technical fouls, disqualifications and forfeitures.
