On Friday 12 September the Senior Academic Society (SAS) visited the Houses of Parliament. They started their visit with a tour of both Houses, where they saw many things including the Queen’s throne. It was very impressive and elaborately decorated, the pupils said it was tempting to try the famous seat. Afterwards they visited the House of Commons where the SAS were lucky enough to sit in on a real debate about whether ‘education matters.’ The second part of the day was taken up by an interactive workshop. The pupils worked as Members of Parliament ‘Making Laws’ and debating a prospective bill. During this, the hardest thing was to follow this rule: ‘To obey the Speaker’s word ‘order’, to stay impersonal and not to criticise the opponents.’ The SAS meet every Monday throughout term to discuss future trips and lectures. boxhillschool/SENIOR-ACADEMIC-SOCIETY-VISIT-THE-HOUSES-OF-PARLIAMENT
