On Friday I said that NSW being in a strong financial position is meaningless if we don’t use our financial strength to help the vulnerable. I was speaking about refugees at the time, but this same principle is equally true of our pensioners and seniors. We were very disappointed when the Federal Government cut funding of key concessions to these members of our community, and we immediately acted to cover the shortfall of these harsh cuts for 12 months. Well, today I have announced an election commitment to extend this support by a further 3 years - a $343 million commitment to our seniors and pensioners. These concessions offer savings on public transport, energy and water bills, council rates and car rego. With our NSW budget now under control, and with the State’s finances strong, we are in a position to extend this vital support for a further three years. A key commitment of this government is to protect the vulnerable in our community and I hope today’s announcement gives some peace of mind to those in our community who depend on these concessions.
