On Friday I was invited by @Prof_Anil_Jain to attend this meeting @GenesisBCP The Nightingale Centre in Wythenshawe https://t.co/cuSvrgg4Mh #breastcancer #BCAM Good meeting regarding Asian #breastcancer support with lots of interesting info and speakers aswell as @andyburnhammp Main points arising from the meeting:- Incidence of #breastcancer Asian vs Caucasian are much earlier age 45 vs 57 via @KailashChandOBE (This is a BIG point and from research from 1975) Adopting western #diet & lifestyle INCREASES the incidence of #breastcancer - Stephen Duffy Prof of Cancer Screening London The suggestion was eating a Mediterranean diet. Contacting people by phone as a reminder increases take up of #mammograms - may do text messages in the future - Stephen Duffy #Reconstruction rates have a lower up take with Asians vs Caucasian this is the 1st study done in UK @GenesisBCP In secondary #breastcancer there is an increased risk in Asians vs Caucasian - Stephen Duffy Cure was talked about a lot in the meeting when reality is that 30% will get metastatic / secondary #breastcancer I asked Andy Burnham A couple of questions.. Firstly about diet and exercise and why there isnt something available to all like the programme in the USA which offers 12 weeks via YMCA to get people regularly exercising. He said he would discuss this but dont hold any hopes as it would most likely cost too much money. Silly really as the benefits long term for the NHS may mean savings due to various factors physically and mentally. The other issue was to have increased awareness of secondary breast cancer. Its something that is close to him as his wife has had preventative mastectomy and 2 of her relatives have died due to this so its way up in his agenda. My issue was he fact that secondary breast cancer patients seem to be kept apart from primary bc patients and the awareness of secondary needs to be highlighted to primary as 30% will eventually get secondary. He said he would also look into this... Another point he talked about was health issue with school children. It was a shame that @andyburnhammp didnt think that there was awareness in schools re breast cancer . The biggest programme for awareness for young people is founded by Kris Hallenga and her charity @CoppaFeelPeople Also there is no point in learning children about health issues ie diet and exercise in schools if that message isnt instilled at home by the parents. This is where the big problem is, parents must take responsibility for this.
