On Friday November 14, 2014, the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO), held a groundbreaking ceremony at the new stand where it is to begin constructing an extension building of the ARIPO Headquarters. This ceremony was officiated by the Deputy Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Honourable F. Chasi (MP). Dignitaries who attended this occasion were the Chairman of the ARIPO Administrative Council (Mr. T. Benyama), the Director General of ARIPO (Mr. F.A. dos Santos), the former Director General of ARIPO (Mr. G.H. Sibanda), the Registrar General of Zimbabwe (Mr. F. Maredza) and ARIPO staff. At this ceremony, Honourable Chasi planted a palm tree at the construction stand. During the occasion Honourable Chasi said that the palm planting activity heralded a new era in ARIPO’s life as the Organization was reaching higher heights to new levels in IP. Honourable Chasi challenged the architect to complete the project in the shortest time and respecting the high quality required of the project. He reminded everyone of his government’s permanent support for the Organization since its arrival in Zimbabwe. The Chairperson of the ARIPO Administrative Council, Mr. Benyama, applauded everyone involved in the project and brought well-wishes from the Chairperson of the Council of Ministers. Mr. Benyama further thanked the former Director General, Mr. Sibanda, for acquiring the extension stand for the Organization. He was very hopeful that the project will be completed in good time during his chairmanship to afford the Organization the holding of the next sessions of the Administrative Council and the Council of Ministers. The Director General of ARIPO, Mr. dos Santos, also lauded Mr. Sibanda for that vision. He explained newest mandates given to the Organization since the operationalization of the Banjul Protocol. He said that the new mandates had placed a space premium on the ARIPO Secretariat hence the new project which is currently estimated at US$3 million with a project life of 18 months. The Director General appreciated efforts by the Honourable Minister and his government. He further thanked Chairpersons of the ARIPO Councils as well as his personnel.
