On Friday and Saturday nights the downtown area observed LIGHTS OUT FLAGSTAFF to make citizens aware of the importance of Dark Skies. The Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition helped make this event a reality and was there on Friday night to educate and enlighten our citizens about proper exterior lighting fixtures and how residential light trespass is becoming an important issue as well. I was there pointing out constellations and teaching how the stories written in the stars can transmit scientific knowledge. The Coconino Astronomical Society, provided telescopes to observe the night skies during the event on Heritage Square. A blanket of stars was clearly visible over downtown Flagstaff once the lights in the square were turned out a 7:30 p.m. Earth Hour was held Saturday night in Flagstaff and around the world. As Flagstaff is the First International Dark Sky City in the World its only natural our community would reach out across our planet in a manner such as this.
