On Friday, former US Citizenship and Immigration officer Mai Nhu Nguyen, 48, was sentenced to serve 2 1/2 years in prison for bribery. According to prosecutors, Nguyen accepted bribes from citizenship and green card applicants in cash and, in at least one case, 200 egg rolls, between 2011 and 2013. Nguyen pleaded guilty to soliciting and accepting bribes in May. Public officials and law enforcement officers are often held to higher standards of behavior than the general public, so a conviction for official corruption, bribery, or police misconduct can destroy a career in politics or public service.
