On Friday the Los Alamos National Laboratory will close unless the congress can find a compromise to reopen the federal government. With the lab being the 6th largest employer in the state and the major economic driver for northern New Mexico, Los Alamos county and the surrounding communities will feel the effect of the closure swiftly and quickly. Businesses in Los Alamos are bracing for a large reduction in business, Los Alamos County is bracing for less gross receipts tax and the surrounding areas are anticipating the same for their communities. Local financial institutions are offering programs to assist furloughed workers. Groups that help people facing turmoil are anticipating a higher demand for their services. Annually, LANL is responsible for $1.05 billion in employee compensation and benefits and has an economic impact of $4.38 million a day. The lab will retain a security force and some workers to maintain the safety and security of the lab. Everyone else will be furloughed.
