On Friday the White House announced a new $40 million aid program for Guatemala and a $25 million aid program for El Salvador. According to the Obama administration, this money will be spent to improve security in those countries, specifically targeting gangs that recruit children, and as a result contribute to the large number of young refugees entering the United States illegally. In addition, the United States will be giving another $9.6 million to Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras to help the countries reintegrate their citizens who are deported from the United States. These aid programs are the Obama Administrations way of showing Congress that they are serious about curbing the amount of illegal immigrants, an element of immigration reform that can only be strengthened by legislative action.
