On Friday we covered Dexter and his rescue by tutor James. Well James also took on Bob. Bob was a Rottweiler, hidden around the back of the rescue centre, and waiting to be destroyed. The staff had put him in a kennel, and now he wouldnt let anyone near him. The vet needed to get to him and remove a chain from Bobs neck, which he had grown into, but couldnt get close enough. The very experienced staff struggled with Bob for two weeks and made no progress. Thats when they decided he should be PTS. He wouldnt let anyone in and wouldnt come out, even when left with the door open all night. It took James 45 minutes to get into the kennel with Bob, kneeling down, going in backwards, treats in hand, no eye contact or forward facing body language. It took calm and a degree of nerves of steel. It also required him to know exactly what he was doing! Do not try this at home! Another half an hour in the kennel with Bob, and he gave up his fears and his aggression, flopped his head down on James knee, and enjoyed a head massage! He had every issue going. He hated other men, traffic, cars, bikes, bicycles, water, houses, staircases, suffered separation anxiety after making the bond with James...you name it, Bob had it. Now, hes a different dog! He still needs new men to meet him politely, then hes absolutely fine. He loves kids, loves water (cant get him out of it!), has no issue with traffic or anything else, and can be left at home without destroying the place!
