On Friday we were saddened to learn of the death of Peter Sculthorpe. This great Australian composer was not only central to our repertoire as an orchestra ever since we premiered Sun Music I in 1965, but he inspired and encouraged all who came in contact with him, both musicians and staff. Nearly everyone has a memory of his generosity, kindness, good humour and warm enthusiasm. He will be sorely missed as a personality and as a dedicated and tremendously hard-working composer who felt keenly about the world around him and the culture of his homeland.
