On Jan. 1, the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine became members of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)—a critical step toward a single accreditation system for all graduate medical education programs in the United States. While ACGME and AOA currently have separate accreditation systems for allopathic and osteopathic (D.O.) residency and fellowship programs, beginning July 1, AOA-accredited programs will begin a five-year transition to ACGME accreditation. Osteopathic standards will be added to ACGME standards to define osteopathic programs, and M.D.s and D.O.s will remain eligible for all residencies.
